This program introduces the viewer to Chris Bach’s pioneering and innovative approach to dogs and dog behavior modification. Although based on complex principles THE THIRD WAY is so natural, uncomplicated and empowering that it is readily accepted and implemented by beginner and expert alike.

Behavior consultants, classroom and private instructors, service and working dog trainers benefit from learning about THE THIRD WAY for two important reasons. First, its theories and techniques are very effective in giving dogs accurate and timely information about their behavior. As a result problems are prevented, learning is enhanced, and performances become more reliable and accurate. In addition, problem solving programs are both successful and gratifying. THE THIRD WAY is such an easy to comprehend perspective that pet and working dog owners alike will want to embrace its practical and empathetic view of why dogs do what they do. Owners and trainers are also offered a plethora of dog and user-friendly strategies for guiding, managing and educating canines so they become cherished pets or dependable and highly effective working partners.

Seven exclusive paradigms are presented and demonstrated in these DVDs and described in the Reference Book:
1. The Two Life-Long Connections which utilize the dog’s name and the unique way THE THIRD WAY uses an "indicator noise" or event marker.
2. The Three Golden Gifts which provide the perfect ways for owners to attain and maintain a successful, life-long relationship with their dogs.
3. The Three Touchstone Questions which show people how to enrich their relationship by being on the dog’s program.
4. The Three Foundation Games which effectively get three imperatively important skills under the owner’s stimulus control.
5. The Three Essential Elements of Teaching which maximizes the results of every teaching session.
6. The Three Criteria for Reinforcement which effectively replaces the traditional and difficult-to-adhere-to system of reinforcing pre-determined time intervals or numbers of responses.
7. The Three Steps to Optimum Performance which results in dogs that will reliably and accurately perform skills on cue under difficult and demanding circumstances.

In addition, the DVDs include a discussion about the differences between teaching and problem solving with offers of solution options that are palatable and workable for beginners as well as experts.

Enjoyable and enlightening "people" games are played that can easily be implemented by consultants and instructors to help them teach owners how to be more empathetic and accepting of their dog’s limitations.

This home-study program assists dog behavior practitioners in thinking outside of the box to find the most positive and humane strategies for effectively teaching dogs skills, properly guiding and managing them and giving them and their human caretakers the best possible quality of life together.

The purpose of this program is to take a look at Chris Bach’s new, innovative and provocative prospective on dog aggression, the number one problem affecting the global dog/human community. She hypothesizes that conflicts occurring between people and dogs or between dogs and other dogs or animals that cause defensive reactions are based on species survival vs. species demise and as such are a natural and necessary part of animal behavior. From this point of view dog training practitioners are presented with strategies which enable them to deal with this difficult, yet natural aspect of animal behavior in a more enlightened and therefore more effective way. Profound and effective problem identification, problem preventing and problem solving strategies are discussed from this perspective.

These important questions are addressed in this program:
1. Are dog owners learning the best possible and most accurate information about the true nature of dogs?
2. Should dogs have the same space and safety "rights" as people?
3. Is the traditional use of the "wolf model" preventing or promoting problems? Does it help or hinder solutions?
4. Are dogs "status seekers"?
5. What if "Aggression" is really "Defensiveness" and a necessary aspect of survival?
6. What do dogs defend? Why? How?

The following empowering solutions are also presented:
1. Reframe dog aggression into dog defensiveness.
2. Approach defensiveness as a natural and necessary aspect of animal behavior.
3. Consider that changing a defensive dog into a non-defensive dog is impossible because it depends upon choices that animals are incapable of making.
4. Explore the limitations of the traditional problem solving strategies that utilize flooding, desensitizing and/or counter conditioning because they are only effective when utilized in a laboratory or very controlled environments and not in the real world where dogs and people live.
5. Explore the merits of THE THIRD WAY’S strategy because it is natural and can easily be utilized in the real world.

Looking at the problem of aggression from the dog’s point of view helps to persuade owners, trainers and caretakers to redefine how they should expect dogs to act. Once it is theorized that the true motivation behind "aggressive" behaviors is really defensiveness, greater care will be taken to protect all dogs’ social space and general safety which in turn will prevent problems. This empathetic and understanding way of looking at dogs and dog behavior presented in this course will go a long way in assuring the successful design of kinder, more realistic and yet effective problem solving programs.
